The Imprint was farther than it looked. Gabe had hoped to reach it before the end of the day, but began to accept defeat as the sun sank lower in the sky. Gabe walked fast during the day, needing the adrenaline to numb the ache of hunger. He wished he could shift, since the heat made his mouth dry and his head throb. Ryan nearly passed out, and they had to stop and take a break.

They came across the corpses of birds decaying in the heat as they got closer to the Imprint.

“Looks like they fell outta the damn sky,” Ben murmured.

They shifted to wolves long enough to consume the carrion. Not his best meal by any means, but Gabe would take it. Finally, the hunger pains faded and they traveled on with higher spirits.

The sun disappeared beyond the brown hills and Gabe sighed his relief. His skin was burnt and peeling in places since the trees offered no shade. They were barren and warped, their bark a sickly white. The heat of the day turned cool and pleasant as they made camp among the dead trees using their backpacks as pillows, the ground hard beneath them.

The stars burned bright up above, twinkling against a blanket of indigo sky. He wished New York had stars like these.

He wished Max was here to see them with him.

Knowing it was hopeless, he pulled out his phone but the screen flickered on and off as he tried to type out one of many messages he’d composed over the past several days out in the desert. He couldn’t send any of them.

Gabe: I had a dream where we failed. I failed. I’m restless. I know I’ve got to find Stone, but all I want is to come home and make sure you’re all right. I can’t. I won’t come home until I know I’ve done everything I can to make sure you’re safe. I love you. I miss you.

He hit send in vain, knowing it wouldn’t go through. The phone told him off like he knew it would. Hurling it into the dirt, he rolled over, facing away from it. He exhaled around the lump in his throat, blinking hard. Max was an ocean away, worrying about him, trying to call or message, wondering what had become of him, why he wouldn’t answer.

“I’m sorry,” he said to no one and nothing.

How long would it be before he could see Max again, hold him in his arms, kiss the freckle above his lips?

How was his mother? Worried sick, most likely. Izzie was probably still mad at him. He hoped Zach was looking after his family in Gabe’s absence.

The joy of being one with the wilds had faded, and he and his wolf longed for the familiarity of pack, den, and territory. He closed his eyes tight, trying to remember when they’d said goodbye, when he’d held Max in his arms. The memory slipped through his fingers like water. He couldn’t remember the words they’d spoken as they said goodbye.
